BingoPlus, the Philippines’ most comprehensive digital entertainment platform, has taken a significant step in supporting the country’s vibrant film industry by becoming a major sponsor of the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF). Held at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California, this event is a celebration of Philippine cinema’s artistry and global appeal.
The MIFF, an annual showcase of Philippine-made motion pictures, aims to highlight the creativity and quality of Filipino filmmakers across various genres. Originally scheduled for January, the festival was postponed due to the devastating wildfires in Southern California but successfully resumed to bring Philippine cinema to the international stage.
A Celebration of Filipino Films
The festival featured a press conference for select media partners, followed by a special screening of several notable films, including:
- Eraserheads: Combo on the Run
- Tribute to Genghis Khan
- The Debut
- Love Hurts
Among the highlights was Tribute to Genghis Khan, a landmark film celebrating its 75th anniversary. Directed by the legendary Manuel Conde, this classic Filipino movie made history as the first Philippine film to gain international recognition at the Venice Film Festival in 1952. Its journey from local acclaim to global recognition is a testament to the enduring legacy of Philippine cinema.
Exclusive Events and Recognition
In addition to the screenings, the festival included a Director’s Breakfast and a Director’s Guild of America Tour, both held at the Cavatina Restaurant in West Hollywood, California. These events provided a platform for filmmakers and industry professionals to connect and share insights about the craft.
The second screening showcased The Kingdom, a film portraying an alternate history of the Philippines untouched by colonization. Piolo Pascual, BingoPlus’ brand ambassador, delivered a standout performance as Sulayman “Sulo” Tagum, earning him a dual nomination for Best Actor and the prestigious Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award at the Metro Manila Film Festival.
BingoPlus’ Commitment to Philippine Cinema
By sponsoring the MIFF, BingoPlus demonstrates its commitment to promoting Philippine cinema on the global stage. The platform believes in the power of storytelling and the skill of Filipino filmmakers, whose work deserves international recognition.
Through this sponsorship, BingoPlus aims to inspire and empower the next generation of Filipino filmmakers, ensuring that their talents are seen and celebrated worldwide.
