Yet, the country faces a severe shortage of trained professionals, with fewer than one mental health worker per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>In Cebu, the Barangay Behavioral Health Unit in Lahug has reported a surge in cases of anxiety, depression, and suicide-related calls \u2014 underscoring the urgent need for intervention.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2081\" src=\"https:\/\/bingoplus.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bingoplus-foundation-mental-health-training-cebu.webp\" alt=\"Barangay health workers during training\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bingoplus.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bingoplus-foundation-mental-health-training-cebu.webp 1024w, https:\/\/bingoplus.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bingoplus-foundation-mental-health-training-cebu-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/bingoplus.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bingoplus-foundation-mental-health-training-cebu-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Empowering_Barangay_Health_Workers_Through_Training\"><\/span>Empowering Barangay Health Workers Through Training<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To close this gap, the BingoPlus Foundation rolled out a two-part capacity-building program for community health workers, teachers, and barangay leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The training focused on three key areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Foundational knowledge on mental health and psychosocial support.<\/li>\n<li>Practical skills such as psychological first aid, active listening, and referral pathways.<\/li>\n<li>Culturally sensitive approaches to reduce stigma and promote early help-seeking.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>From July 31 to August 1, 2025, the Foundation trained 52 barangay health and nutrition workers as community-level mental health first responders, in collaboration with the Mandaue City Health Department.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs a barangay health worker, I now feel more confident talking to residents about their struggles. Before, I didn\u2019t know what to say. These interactive sessions focus on well-being, family dynamics, and breaking mental health stigma, ensuring that conversations on mental health become part of daily community life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMental health is often overlooked in grassroots communities, yet the need is urgent,\u201d said Angela Camins-Wieneke, Executive Director of BingoPlus Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy equipping local health workers and educators with the right tools, we are helping communities become more compassionate and resilient.
